A Sunny Day For Some Science On A Southbank Soapbox

On Friday last week I had the pleasure of photographing an event called Soapbox Science. Soapbox Science is an annual public science communication event, sponsored by L'Oreal that transforms public areas in central London into an arena for public learning and scientific debate. The event follows the format of Hyde Park’s Speaker’s Corner, which is historically an arena for public debate. There were three separate time slots, each lasting an hour, with four leading female scientists standing atop their soapbox, talking about their area of expertise to any passers by that cared to listen. And many passers by did just that. Not only did they listen, but they also asked questions and engaged with the speakers a great deal.

Some of my favourite photos from the event, a couple of which I've added to my website's event gallery:

Ta Ta Maggie!

I got up this morning at the crack of dawn to head down to St Paul's Cathedral and ensure I got a good spot for the funeral procession for ex-Conservative Prime Minister, 'Iron Lady' Margaret Thatcher. Love or hate her, she certainly drew a crowd as 2,000 people attended the funeral service itself and many thousands more lined the streets to wish her goodbye or good riddance.

Here are some of my favourite shots from the event - hope you like them!

Police lined the streets all morning.

This guy was clearly a Maggie fan.

Some people had a view from above.

Security was extreme with Police everywhere.

I have no idea how some of these guys saw anything, the way their hat covered their eyes!

People left after the funeral service began and went off to work - a slightly different commute to normal!

Walk.Eat.Talk.Eat.

The Walk.Eat.Talk.Eat. tour gets going through the streets of East London Today I had the pleasure of joining a food tour of East London led by my friend Charli and her walking tours company, Walk.Eat.Talk.Eat.

We started in Dishoom, a modern Indian restaurant, before heading across the road to grab some supersize jammy dodgers from Albion for the impending walk.

Having scoffed down the jammy dodgers, we headed to Brick Lane to grab a beigel, although the shop was so busy that we skipped it and headed to Ely's Yard instead. Huddling under the gazebo to stay out of the rain, we had these lovely Italian flatbreads from Piadina Pronta, and tasty (but not too spicy) buffalo wings from Orange Buffalo.

To finish off there were chips from Poppies fish and chip shop on Hanbury Street, which have apparently recently won an award for having the best chips in London. I'm not sure I agree with that though!

Jewish Book Week

Edmund De Waal talks about his recent book, The Hare With Amber Eyes. A couple of weeks ago I was invited along to take photos one evening at Jewish Book Week, an annual celebration of Jewish literature. It took place at King's Place, with its fantastic halls which are more often used for classical music concerts.

The event was extremely busy with lots of people keen to hear about books from the mouthes of their authors.

You can see a wider selection of my photos from the event at the link below.
